Which Scottish Political Party Do You NOT Trust?

Aug 29th, 2011 | By | Category: Politics

Which Scottish political party do you NOT trust – the party you believe that has let the Scottish people down the most? Not just from the lifetime of the present parliament, but since 1999 when Scotland first became a devolved parliament.

Before you make a decision, here is a table showing how many seats in Holyrood each political party won after the May 2011 election, along with a link to their official websites.

Political PartySeatsWebsite
Scottish National Party69Scottish National Party
Scottish Labour37Scottish Labour
Scottish Conservatives15Scottish Conservatives
Scottish Liberal Democrats5Scottish Liberal Democrats
Scottish Green Party2Scottish Green Party
Independent1Margo MacDonald

I have omitted the independent MSP Margo MacDonald from this poll, as she is not affliated to any political party.

You are very welcome to post a comment after you have voted, to let us know why you feel that party let Scotland down, but please moderate the language – and no flaming, just good old-fashioned debate.

  1. [...] Scotch Potch on which political parties don’t earn trust. [...]

  2. Traquir says:

Only Scottish National Party and Scottish Green Party are registered political parties in Scotland as per Electoral Commission. Neither Scottish Labour ‘Party’ , Scottish Conservative ‘Party’ nor
Scottish Liberal Democrats ‘Party’ are real political parties they are merely branches of London HQ’ed and London controlled political parties. Even after much hyped Scottish Labour review there is no change here and no desire to set up as a real and independent Scottish political party. The Unionist parties unwillingness to even set up and register their own party is a con job on the Scottish people who reasonably on the ballot papers seeing their ‘party’ names would think they are indeed ‘parties’ rather
than branches. Deceiving the public in this way and doing so for decades proves that this
Unionist cabal who will gang up on SNP at any opportunity can’t be trusted to look after
Scotland’s best interests – none of the three of them can be trusted.

    Hi Traquir

You make a valid point about only 2 of the 5 parties in the Poll being registered as Scottish political parties.
I suppose I could have worded the Poll differently, but I just wanted to get the views of the Scottish people about which party they do not trust, irrespective of where that party is controlled from.
The LibDems, Labour and Conservatives are all running scared and are mounting all-out attacks on the SNP, which pleases me because it shows that these parties are getting really worried and that finally, Scotland has a real ‘Scottish’ party in government.
I wonder what Alex Salmond’s inaugural speech would have been, if back in 1999, the people of Scotland had seen through Labour and voted SNP?
    Thanks for your comment.

  4. Traquir says:

Thanks Frank. Your phrasing of the question was spot on as even although they are not Parties that is the label/marketing that they have spun so needs to be used. Your right they are running really scared.
As you say would have been very interesting back in 1999 had Scottish people seen through these
Unionists as wolf’s in sheep clothing. Even more interesting is if Scottish Labour had not inflicted
one of their deepest treacheries on Scotland (although McCrone & 6000sq mile 1999 annexation are
way up there to) with the 40% rule where they denied the majority yes vote (51.6%) which would have
set up a Scottish Parliament in 1979 and given a level of protection against England imposed Thatcher Government, but instead the majority Yes vote was overturned with
Labour conjuring up the dead and non-voters
as being against the Referendum and subsequently their Feeble Fifty Labour MPs left Scotland
to be decimated by Thatcher&small but well rewarded set of Scottish turncoat officers.

  5. Lpmch says:

The Labour party will stop and indeed has stopped at nothing to keep Scotland under Westminster control. They can never live down McCrone, the Maritime Grand Theft, the sell out of the working class and Unions, and of course, Iraq. Their principles now have them pulling out the stops to retain Nuclear weapons in Scotland. Sad changed days.
Liberal Democrats are not far behind them but were pushed into my second spot by their sheer irrelevance. Similarly the Tory party in Scotland are too ineffective to even label untrustworthy.

  6. FJH says:

    Thanks for your comment Lpmch.

What do you think will happen to the Tories, LibDems and Labour if Scotland does eventually break free of Westminster rule? They cannot in all honesty have MSPs in Holyrood because their HQs are in England.

And what effective opposition to the SNP government will there be? All that’s left is the independent Margo MacDonald and the Green Party.

If Alex Salmond holds an election as soon as it is legally possible after the referendum, it could mean a clean sweep for the SNP. I’m concerned that we lack a strong opposition party that would criticise the government if it goes too far and fails to keep its promises to the Scottish people.

  7. Jock Watson says:

I voted Conservatives as least trustworthy, although I wish I could’ve chosen more than 1 as Liebore & The Lib Dems woul’dve got my vote too.

  8. Jock Watson says:

Scottish Conservatives, though if this had allowed me to make more than 1 choice I woul’ve also chosen Scottish Liebore & the Scottish Lib Dems. I wouldn’t trust any of these as far as I could throw them.

  9. Cameron says:

    Scottish Labour…no comment.

  10. Annickburn says:

    Interesting results so far.
I didn’t realise that S.lab & S.Cons & S.Libdems were not registered parties in Scotland! It makes you wonder what everyone votes for in elections in Scotland!
As these names are already in use (but not registered) in Scotland can the names be registered in the event of Independence? and if so, would they still be affiliated to their English Parties?
It also makes you think if the Scottish Lab/Cons/Libs had been proper Scottish Parties with Scottish interests at their heart, would the current Independence question be more balanced and fair?
However the prospect of fresh new parties in opposition after a Yes vote is quite exciting.
My only concerns, giving the attitude of our current MSPs in opposition, is that any new ‘party’ will just be a spin-off’ of the old and these politicians go out of their way to make things difficult in the first years of Independence.
I also wonder in what way the SNP will change their policies in a new Independent Scotland and if the Party will survive. Perhaps in the long term it will break up and produce the new opposition parties as I believe there is a mixture of Left, Centre and Right wing minded people already sitting under the SNP umbrella for the main cause of an Independent Scotland. ( this is not a bad thing)

  11. Lyall says:

After the Joyce punch Labour refuse a by-election stating “we would rather have a nutter than a nat”, they know they would lose and they dont care about the voters in Falkirk nor Scotland, the tactics we see in the run up to the local elections show Labour still treating Scottish voters like idiots. Times have changed but they just dont see it!

  12. Helena Brown says:

I have to say that I trust nobody but the SNP to deliver a decent future for the Scots. The Greens have a trouble supporting anything which and unless it is totally green, someone really needs to ask them how much goods a bicycle can transport. We need roads and yes we need rail, pity it seems to come in so expensive at present and like it not we in Fife need to be connected to the rest of Scotland, so yes we need another bridge as a tunnel seems to be out of the picture.
Labour are absolutely disgraceful living on their past here in Scotland and practicing deceit on their voters as they masquerade as Tories mark 2 in the South, as for the Lib Dems and the Tories, what do they actually represent. Margo, well she has swung so many ways politically that she is as well an Independent and I do not have to trust her as she is not in a position to be elected by me.

  13. Morris Young says:

We should call them LONDON Labour LONDON Tory and LONDON Lib Dem since that is where they are based and controlled from and answerable to.
They are alien to Scotland parties , and misrepresent the peoples best interests. We are too lenient by far and I have no hesitation in recognising them as quisling duplicitous scum who betray the people knowingly and daily. They have no excuse, and should be shown no respect whatsoever for what they have done.
THEY ARE FOREIGN TO ME , but not foreign enough ! I will gladly offer the hand of frienship to the world………..but I will do so as a Scotsman, living in one of Europes oldest and non warmongering nations, and extend that hand to those who have the good sense to reciprocate .The SNP has been consistent in its intentions ,something which NONE of the Quisling Muppets have even tried.
Our country needs us. We dare not keep her waiting any longer.ALBA GU BRATH

  14. Iain More says:

I dont trust any of the Brit Unionist Partys but I could only vote for one and not all of them. It is hard as they are all in a competition to sell Scotland out!

  15. Karen says:

Yup, only the Greens and SNP can be trusted (although the SNP are dodgy on planning – see Trump/Menie)

  16. Taimoshan says:

Bit later on in time than most cmments (today 11th May 2012) and Labour are going into coalition with the Tories to form some councils and courted the Orange order prior to the vote as the polls were not lookingt good for them. Labour – the lowest of the low!
