On Culloden Moor on the 16th of April 1746 and in the space of one hour, nearly 2,000 Jacobites were killed or wounded. The English government’s army faired better, with only 50 dead and 259 wounded. The Battle of Culloden Moor was a decisive crushing defeat for Bonnie Prince Charlie and he plan to restore the House of Stewart to the British throne would never be realised.

The Duke Of Cumberland who was loyal to the British government, pursued the fleeing Jacobites. He meted out terrible punishment to the Jacobites and in the coming days and months, he assisted the government in implementing civil penalties that directly threatened the the structure of the Scottish clans.
