Video: Harry Lauder – Roamin’ In The Gloamin’

Harry Lauder was descended from the Lauders of Bass. He was born in Portobello Edinburgh on the 4th of August 1870. After his father died, his mother moved the family to Lanarkshire and He became a miner, working in Hamilton.

When he was working in the mines he used to entertain his fellow workers with songs. He decided to try his luck at entertaining and made his first appearance onstage at Larkhall, which is near Hamilton.

He gained experience touring the music halls and began to polish his act, becoming more professional. Later, he visited the USA and became very popular there.

In 1919 he was awarded a knighthood for his work in entertaining the troops in World War One.

Sir Harry Lauder died on the 26 February 1950 in Strathaven Scotland.
